Why did Titchfield Primary School choose FFT Success for All Phonics?
Following their Ofsted inspection in March 2022, Titchfield Primary’s points for improvement were:
- Leaders need to ensure that there is a single, systematic phonics programme and train all staff to teach and follow it.
- Leaders must make sure that pupils read books that closely match with the letters and sounds they have learned.
After conducting some research, the school chose FFT Success for All Phonics because the programme was developed after extensive research, had on-demand training that all staff could access and were impressed that the books had been written specifically for the programme. The resources were bright and accessible and they also appreciated that FFT had kept costs for schools low.
They also liked the Reading Assessment Programme as well as the Tutoring with the Lightning Squad intervention, which they knew could really support children across the school.

Implementing the programme

The school fully implemented Success for All Phonics in Reception and Year 1 and aspects of the end of the Year 1 programme in Year 2.
They used Tutoring with the Lightning Squad across the school for children who were not where they expected them to be in reading and ensured that they used the Reading Assessment Programme data for every child in the school to target the Lightning Squad intervention.
Staff found the training videos helpful and that these modelled the different parts of the lessons clearly and the resources supported the teaching. Teachers gave feedback that plans were straightforward to follow and FFT colleagues were very willing to answer any questions we had.
