Why did Claremont Primary School choose FFT Success for All Phonics?

By adopting FFT Success for All Phonics, Claremont Primary School aimed to address the specific needs of their pupils, over 90% of whom come from non-English speaking backgrounds and have limited literacy skills.

The programme not only provided these pupils with the opportunity to have someone read a book to them, but were happy to see that the programme accommodated various learning styles, allowing each pupil to reach their full potential.

We chose this programme because it allows our staff to teach phonics using their expertise and it is easy for our pupils to engage with. The programme doesn't rely on technology or characters that can be over-complicated, especially for our EAL learners.

Jennifer Sach

Assistant Head Teacher and Phonics Lead

We have adopted FFT Success for All Phonics this year and it has had a dramatic impact. Our Year 1 PSC score has gone from 65% to 82%, this would have been even higher without the new arrivals. Children who have arrived during Year 1, some of whom had never been to school before, have achieved the pass mark in phonics.

Our children and staff are amazing, and they have embraced the programme. We have ensured that staff across the school are trained and able to implement the strategies for all our children.

The pupils and staff have embraced the FFT Success for All Phonics programme and it has been instrumental in enhancing children’s reading and writing skills; it has truly transformed the way the pupils learn and engage with language.

Reading progress made

2022/23
First round of phonics
  • Our year 1 PSC score has gone from 65% to 82%.
  • The children have engaged with the lessons and really enjoy activities; the focus on oral blending has supported their progress.
  • Teachers like that the programme is simple to follow and deliver which means they can focus on the delivery of lessons and the day-to-day progress made by the children.
Second round of phonics
  • Children coming into Year 1 from Reception are confident to work with a partner and to support each other when decoding.
  • Our results from the Reading Assessment Programme are showing progress every time we use it.
  • Teachers were so impressed by the phonics programme that we have now started to use Routes to Reading and Spelling with the Jungle Club in Year 2.

Spotlight on pupil progress

Pupil A joined the school in nursery and struggled to focus. He continued to find listening difficult in Reception and especially found it hard to build relationships. As a result, he didn’t leave reception with the expected GLD. In Year 1, he settled quickly into the phonics sessions, finding the predictable structure very supportive.

He especially enjoyed the collaborative learning elements of the Partner Practice Book and the Shared Reader. He achieved a score of 37 in the Year 1 phonics screening check and now, in Year 2, he is reading 7 months above his chronological age.

Now I am in Year 2, we work in our spelling books and I can remember the sounds we had on the washing line in Year 1.
I am reading Animal Poems in Year 2 and there are lots of rhyming words. I can use phonics to read them.

Why is Claremont Primary School pleased with FFT Success for All Phonics?

Jennifer Sach, Assistant Head Teacher and Phonics Lead, highlights the benefits seen since using the phonics programme:

The structured approach of the programme has made phonics lessons enjoyable for the pupils, whilst the staff are able to use their phonics expertise. We chose this programme because it allows our staff to teach phonics using their expertise and it is easy for our pupils to engage with. The programme doesn’t rely on technology or characters that can be over complicated, especially for our EAL learners.
The collaborative learning aspects of the programme make phonics lessons enjoyable and feed into the structure of other lessons and guided reading lessons as the children progress through the school.
The RAP, alongside teachers’ day to day assessments, enables us to identify children who need additional support.
The programme has a focus on oral blending and segmenting which a lot of our pupils find difficult. We have seen an improvement in our pupils’ decoding and blending skills.
The training offered, both online and in person, has enabled us to support staff across the whole school with the delivery of phonics lessons and we have enjoyed the other wider opportunities for CPD.
Increased confidence in reading and writing, leading to a noticeable difference in pupils overall academic performance.
Improvement in the pupils' ability to decode words and comprehend texts, leading to overall academic progress.
Appreciate how the programme provides tailored instruction to each pupil's individual needs.
