Why did Linton Heights Junior School choose FFT Reciprocal Reading?

Linton Heights Junior School chose FFT Reciprocal Reading after identifying several children who were fluent readers but were not demonstrating the same high-level skills in comprehension. Assessment data showed a clear gap between children physically reading the words and making sense of them. The school saw FFT Reciprocal Reading as the right programme to address this, explicitly teaching and embedding core comprehension strategies to improve outcomes and foster a love of reading among pupils.

The children love coming to the reciprocal reading group. Theyre excited to read the next section, and they love it when there is a twist and what they predicted to happen doesnt!

Implementing the programme

Image

Linton Heights Junior School has used FFT Reciprocal Reading as a targeted intervention for approximately two years, having joined the Reciprocal Reading Pilot Study. In October 2024, the school moved to implementing Reciprocal Reading as a whole-class reading format.

The programme initially focused on Years 5 and 6, with over 30 pupils working across five groups of six. Year 5 was prioritised because staff recognised the importance of building comprehension skills before pupils entered Year 6. However, the impact was clear in both year groups.

To ensure Reciprocal Reading intervention is non-negotiable, two trained teaching assistants are allocated dedicated time that cannot be diverted to other interventions. Sessions are timetabled during assemblies, morning work and end-of-day sessions where possible, ensuring pupils do not miss key lessons. Staff who run sessions are well trained and diligent in logging attendance and session details on the FFT platform.

All staff were trained through in-person training days, with the English Lead disseminating further training in CPD sessions to teachers and Higher-Level Teaching Assistants. The Reciprocal Reading Lead has held several meetings with FFT advisors and participated in webinars alongside other schools. A school visit from an FFT advisor provided additional support in implementing FFT Reciprocal Reading at whole-class level. Online resources within the platform have been particularly valuable, with ready-made planning and reading materials saving staff significant time and building confidence in delivery.

Spotlight on pupil progress

Since adopting FFT Reciprocal Reading, outcomes at Linton Heights Junior School have remained strong, consistently meeting or exceeding national average in reading. Pupils who previously narrowly missed the national standard have begun to meet it. Engagement in reading sessions has increased significantly, with pupils who were previously reluctant to participate now actively taking part. Staff have noted a marked shift in attitude, with a wider range of pupils with varying needs engaging meaningfully in sessions.

Would you recommend FFT Reciprocal Reading?

Absolutely! The change we've seen in our pupils love of reading, understanding of vocabulary, ability to accurately predict and give short concise summaries shows how much our investment has paid off! FFT Reciprocal Reading has made a huge impact on Linton Heights Junior School and wed recommend it to anyone wanting to increase their pupils' love of reading as well as improve reading outcomes for all.
