Why did Gorsey Bank Primary School choose FFT Success for All Phonics?
Gorsey Bank Primary School chose FFT Success for All Phonics because it aligned with their commitment to fostering confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers. The structured and consistent approach to daily phonics lessons, combined with engaging, multi-sensory activities, made it a strong fit for the school.
The programme's ability to support independent reading and writing, enabling pupils to access a broad curriculum, was central to the school's decision. Leaders were particularly impressed by the rigorous assessment materials, including Phonics Screening Check support and the catch-up programme, FFT Tutoring with the Lightning Squad.

Implementing the programme

To ensure all staff were fully trained, Gorsey Bank made use of online FFT training videos alongside face-to-face professional development in professional learning meetings. The training focused on consistent delivery of the FFT lesson structure, ensuring teachers had the necessary subject knowledge and routines in place to deliver content effectively.
All staff across the school received initial and follow-up training, enabling them to support pupils in applying their phonics knowledge across the curriculum and across key stages. The online networking sessions proved particularly valuable, giving staff the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from other schools, share ideas and reflect on how to continue developing practice in their own setting.
The FFT training videos have been invaluable for CPD with staff finding them easy to follow and available to revisit at any time, they have been used in team meetings to spark discussions around best practice and build confidence in using data to support pupil progress.
“Our pupils with SEND are engaged by the ‘alphabet chant’ and the ‘phonics phrases’ which make the learning memorable and accessible for them.”

Progress made
FFT's Success for All Phonics programme has provided Gorsey Bank with consistency across EYFS and KS1. Phonics screening outcomes reflect this:
Phonics Screening Check 2024 – 92%
Phonics Screening Check 2025 – 89%
Staff confidence has grown significantly, with teachers and teaching assistants feeling well-equipped to deliver high-quality phonics lessons. Assessment tools have supported the early identification of gaps, ensuring every child receives the right support at the right time.
Spotlight on pupil progress

The highly structured and rigorous programme, combined with targeted catch-up support, ignited a newfound love of reading. His progress has been remarkable, and he is now thriving, both academically and emotionally, with a growing sense of confidence.
Parents noticed a significant transformation, sharing how he now chooses to read independently at home, often excitedly discussing stories he has encountered. His vocabulary has expanded and he is more articulate in expressing his thoughts. His self-esteem has also improved, with parents noting he is more willing to take on challenges and proud of his achievements. The positive changes have extended beyond the classroom, enriching his home life and strengthening his connection with learning.
